Maple Abroad

Maple Abroad is a company based in Leiden that was originally set up for the purpose of importing and selling authentic Canadian maple syrup products in the Netherlands.

Since our inception in 1996, our catalogue has grown to include a number of other luxury Canadian food products.

Maple syrup is a natural syrup that is made by boiling the sap of certain species of maple trees that can be found in the north eastern region of North America. The sap is tapped in the springtime by drilling a hole into the bark of the tree. The sap is then collected and boiled in order to remove all of the water. It takes approximately 40 litres of sap to produce 1 litre of maple syrup.

Maple syrup is a great natural source of sucrose, and is a great topping for pancakes, waffles and ice cream. Because the boiling process only removes the water from the sap, its nutrients remain in the syrup even after being boiled down. In pure filtered maple syrup, the main minerals present are: potassium manganese, magnesium, phosphorus, and iron.
